What happens when you mix digital twins with gaming? That is one of the things we are thinking about at TOMLIN STUDIO and Twintopia.app. Here is a quick test of how it looks like to run around in Google Earth as a game character, made in Unreal Engine 5.5. We believe this is how young people will want to experience digital twins in the near future. Including myself at 46. Platforms like Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft are shaping the expectations of how users will want to interact virtually with our cities. Fortnite is leading the path to Unreal Engine 6 as a virtual sandbox testing the building blocks for the next generation of Unreal Engine with the new Verse programming language, scene graph, Unreal Revision Control and much more. Playable Places - Digital twin Norrköping #1
At TOMLIN STUDIO, we explored how a digital twin of Norrköping’s iconic industrial landscape could become a Playable Place using UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite). The digital twin is owned by Norrköping Municipality, who made this project possible. With co-funding from Visual Sweden and in collaboration with Linköping University, we tested different 3D versions to find one that could work in Fortnite. Once inside, we made the environment interactive and showcased a few examples of the kinds of games and experiences that can be built there. The goal wasn’t to create a finished game, but to make the digital twin game ready—so it can be used for things like school game jams, immersive exploration, and creative prototyping. Playable Places can be developed in two ways: → In Fortnite, using UEFN. It’s fast to build with thanks to built-in tools, playable on many devices, and millions already have access. → In Unreal Engine, where there’s no built-in audience, but full freedom to integrate real-time data like climate, mobility, or city planning info—and no association with Fortnite’s combat gameplay.
